The default structure of this WordPress Canvas theme is not conducive to having a background sidebar color. However, with a little CSS, this can be easily achieved. As you can see, I made it work specifically for this post. Add this CSS to your Custom CSS box under Appearance => Custom CSS.

.site-main .sidebar-container .widget-area {
	background-color: #eef6f6;
}
.site-main .sidebar-container .widget {
	padding: 10px 20px 0 20px;
}

Now if your left and right side padding add up to 40px, you might want to go to Appearance => Theme Options => Grid, and add 40 pixels to your sidebar width. In my case, my sidebar width would change from 300px to 340px. This way the actual content width of my widget still has a width of 300 pixels, which is what I originally wanted.

I purchased this theme from Creative Market and I noticed that features are missing. I don’t see the home demo page, and I don’t see the various templates and shortcodes that are supposed to come with the package.

WordPress Canvas theme works in tandem with three plugins. WordPress Canvas Gallery, WordPress Canvas Shortcodes, and WordPress Canvas Widgets. Follow this video tutorial on how to install these plugins.

WordPress Canvas follows WordPress’ coding standard. The sole job of a theme is to handle the HTML structure, CSS style, and theme options. Any extra functionality, like a slider, accordions, google maps, columns, etc…, should be packaged as a plugin. There are many advantages to this. The most important being that if a user every switches themes, their site will not break. You can read more about the advantages here.

what I want to do - I want to have a slider set as a background image on my front page, but want all the rest of the pages not to have it (slider behind the title). Is there easier way to do that?

You can create a custom page template if you want. For instructions on that, read this documentation. You can also see a page template built into the theme for a good starting point. In your theme file, look at the file page-guestbook.php

Now, you also might be able to achieve your goal by using Custom CSS. Every WordPress page or post is assigned a unique class in the <body> tag. So for example, If I wanted to change the background image for my home page, I would insert the following Custom CSS.

// Change body background for a specific page with post_id == 2
body.page-id-2 {
    background: url("http://wordpresscanvas.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/YOUR-IMAGE-FILE.jpg") repeat center top scroll;
}

// Remove header background for a specific page with post_id == 2
body.page-id-2 .site-header {
    background: none;
}
